A New Zealand passport is valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16. Which sounds like plenty of time — until you're booking an overseas trip and realise the passport that felt brand new is already pushing its expiry. Worse, many countries won't accept a passport with less than 6 months validity remaining. This guide gives you everything you need to renew on time, every time.
When Should You Renew?
The golden rule: renew when your passport has 9–12 months remaining, not when it expires. Here's why this matters more than most people realise:
- Most countries require at least 6 months validity beyond your return travel date
- Some countries (Japan, Indonesia, USA) have stricter requirements again
- If you have an upcoming trip booked, airlines may deny boarding with a short-validity passport
- Processing times can blow out during peak periods (school holidays, summer)
What You Need to Apply
For an Adult Renewal (18+)
- Your current or most recent NZ passport
- A recent passport-quality photo (taken within last 6 months)
- Completed application form (online or paper)
- Payment: $180 standard, $400 urgent
For a Child Renewal (Under 16)
- Current or most recent child passport
- Recent passport photo
- Consent from both parents or guardians (unless sole guardian — bring documentation)
- Birth certificate if first-time application
- Payment: $140 standard
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
- Apply online at passports.govt.nz — the fastest method for most renewals. You can upload your photo digitally.
- Get your photo certified — if applying by paper, a JP or other authorised person must sign the back of your photo.
- Submit and pay — online applications accept credit/debit cards. Paper applications require a money order or cheque.
- Track your application — online applicants can check status at any time. Standard processing takes 10–15 working days.
- Receive your passport — sent to your NZ address by courier. You'll need to be home to sign for it.
Accepted Photo Requirements
Passport photo rejections are one of the most common reasons for application delays. Your photo must:
- Be taken within the last 6 months
- Show a plain white or light grey background
- Show your full face with eyes open and looking directly at the camera
- Have no glasses (since 2018, glasses are not permitted)
- Be 45mm × 35mm for print, or at least 600 × 750 pixels for digital
How to Never Get Caught Out Again
The biggest problem with passport renewals isn't the process — it's the forgetting. You use your passport every few years, so it's easy to completely lose track of when it expires.
The solution is simple: store your passport in DocStow, add the expiry date, and you'll receive an automatic reminder 9 months before it lapses. Same goes for every other household member's passport. One setup, no more surprises.
"I renewed both kids' passports because DocStow reminded me they'd expire before our planned summer trip. Saved us from a very expensive emergency renewal." — DocStow user
Renewing from Overseas
If you're living abroad, contact the nearest New Zealand embassy or consulate. Processing times are longer (allow 6–8 weeks minimum) and fees may differ. Applications are submitted to the nearest NZ diplomatic post, not to DIA directly.
